AID & ATTENDANCE PENSION ELIGILIBILITY INFORMATION
The Aid and Attendance pension is a non-service connected benefit which means that you did not have to be injured in the line of duty or even participate in combat to qualify.
If you are a US war veteran or the surviving spouse of a US war veteran, you could potentially qualify for the Aid & Attendance benefit.
Qualifications are:
- Veteran must have a minimum of 1 day during an active war as defined by Congress. (see chart below)
- Veteran must have had no less than 90 days of active military service. Surviving spouses must have been married to the veteran when they passed.
- You must have a doctor’s order stating that you need the assistance of another person to live safely in your home.
- You must have less than 80k in checking and savings or even less if you are applying as a single (not including your home or vehicles).
- You must have received an honorable discharge or general discharge.

Who qualifies for the Aid & Attendance pension? To qualify for the A & A pension, the veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty military service, with at least one day during a qualifying period of war (see Chart). There are also income and medical restrictions that apply.
I served active duty during a qualifying period of war, but I was stationed stateside and never actually participated in combat. Am I still eligible for the A & A pension? In most cases, you will still be eligible to receive the A & A pension even though you were never out of country or saw combat. The A & A pension is a non-service connected benefit and actual combat is not required to receive benefits.
I am a surviving spouse of a deceased veteran. Can I qualify for the A & A pension? Yes, the A & A pension is available to widowed spouses. You may be eligible to receive up to $12,681 per year, which you can use directly towards your homecare costs.
If I qualify for benefits, what type of homecare services can I receive? The A & A pension was designed to provide assistance with the activities of daily living. These activities include help with medications, meal preparation, bathing, grooming, laundry, light housekeeping, shopping, errands and respite care services.
How long does the application process take? The Application and approval process for the Aid & Attendance pension can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to complete. As such, this process can sometime be overwhelming. You need to make sure that you provide the VA with all of the information necessary to review your application. Any missing or incomplete information will only delay your claim.
